EMRs Top Priority for 58% of Hospital CIOs
Under the HITECH portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the U.S. government plans to reward healthcare providers with more than $20 billion for their meaningful use of health IT systems such as electronic medical records (EMR) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE). Consequently, a new survey of hospital CIOs found that 58% of respondents say EMR projects are their top priority, followed by CPOE at 56%. The survey was designed to ask about hospital IT leaders' priorities and plans, especially those initiatives involving PCs.
U.S. Congressional Representatives Propose Draft Online Privacy Bill
Controversial draft legislation was introduced last week that would mandate any organization that collects personally identifiable information to display a privacy policy explaining how information is collected, used and disclosed. In addition, the legislation introduced by U.S. Reps. Rick Boucher of Virginia and Cliff Stearns of Florida, would require companies to obtain an individual's “opt-in” consent before collecting sensitive information, such as medical records, financial accounts and Social Security numbers.
Alberta Amends Privacy Legislation
Alberta’s amendments to the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) came into force on May 1, reflecting changes based on recommendations made by the Select Special Personal Information Protection Act.  The most notable of the amendments changes the requirements for notification of data breaches. Any organization that has personal information under its control must notify the Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner without unreasonable delay of any incident involving loss, unauthorized access or disclosure of personal information.
Electronic Waste - Extended Producer Responsibility in Canada
Canada has set forth electronic waste laws mandating product stewardship by province. Since Canada does not have federal waste laws for this type of activity, acceptance and implementation of the provincial electronic waste laws has caused some deviation of scope and timelines, experts say. Currently, Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Saskatchewan have implemented Extended Producer Responsibility (EPS) programs. Prince Edward Island is expected to implement an EPS program in July.
