Redemtech Sponsors CIO Webcast on Off-Network Security
Robert Houghton, president of Redemtech recently participated in a CIO Magazine Webcast, titled: Preventing High Profile Data Breaches: A Root Cause Approach, along with Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute and Miriam Wugmeister, partner with Morrison & Foerster.
Using the 2007 Ponemon Institute research report, National Survey: The Insecurity of Off-Network Security as a guide, attendees of the Webcast gained insight on preventing a costly and increasingly common data security breach.
Incredibly, 62 percent of the study respondents confirmed that, or are unsure if, their off-network equipment contains unprotected sensitive or confidential information, and 30 percent say they would never detect the loss or theft of private data from off-network equipment.
Not only do breaches cost companies time and money, but often reputations as well. Wugmeister offered startling information from a legal standpoint regarding the consequences for data security breaches including federal regulatory and state attorney general action as well as private and class-action lawsuits.
The panel of experts offered recommendations for closing the gap in security and asset management practices, reviewed the off-network security policies that every organization should have in place, and revealed how to support those policies with processes that protect data-bearing assets as they move through, and outside, an organization.

Redemtech Releases Off-Network Security White Paper
Redemtech recently released a new white paper: Preventing Off-Network Data Breaches: Securing the Final Mile on best practices that organizations can implement to better protect equipment when it is removed from the network.
These best practices are recommended to help organizations prevent off-network security lapses, which according to research by the Ponemon Institute accounts for 70 percent of data breaches.
The costs of data breaches continue to riseup 8 percent since 2006 and up 43 percent compared to 2005, according to a new Ponemon Institute study on the cost of a data breach. The average total per-incident cost of a breach is now $6.3, up from $4.8 million in 2006, according to the study. Gartner estimates the cost of a sensitive data breach will increase 20 percent per year through 2009.
The white paper addresses key issues and off-network security processes every organization should employ to ensure assets are protected, including implementing effective management systems, controlling and limiting inventory, creating documentary audit trails, ensuring reliable accounting processes are in place, and measuring the effectiveness of procedures and the means for improving them.

Robert Houghton Presents to Ponemon’s RIM Council
Huge breaches of confidential data seem to be reported by the media on a weekly basis, in spite of substantial security efforts. Why are we failing, and why do breaches continue to occur almost daily across the country?
This question was recently posed to the Ponemon Institute’s Responsible Information Management (RIM) Council by Redemtech President Robert Houghton. He explained that breaches are so persistent because of lack of governance and management rigor, stemming ultimately from a lack of executive focus on the issue of off-network security. Ultimately, companies are spending big bucks to lock the front door, but are leaving the back door wide open.
In his presentation, he offered best practices for the remediation of off-network security including the importance of executive support, governance and allocated budget for the issue.
The RIM Council, which consists of private and public corporations and experts, was created by the Ponemon Institute to “facilitate problem solving and provide links to the best available information in the privacy and data protection disciplines.”
